Kieran Sweetman

About

Kieran is a lawyer with The Acacia Group. Kieran practices in the areas of charity, nonprofit, and religious freedom law. He assists charities, nonprofits, churches, and other faith-based organizations with a variety of legal and governance matters. He is committed to helping organizations build strong legal foundations that enable them to advance their missions effectively and serve their communities well.

Kieran was called to the Ontario Bar in 2026 after earning his Juris Doctor from the Lincoln Alexander School of Law. During law school, he served as President of the Christian Legal Fellowship chapter at Lincoln Alexander and worked in the school’s Career Development and Professional Placement Office. Prior to law school, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Tyndale University, where he was actively involved in student leadership and governance.

Church and Charity Law

Kieran advises charities, nonprofits, churches, and other faith-based organizations on a wide range of legal and governance matters. He assists clients with incorporations, charitable registration matters, corporate governance, policy development, and ongoing compliance with federal and provincial regulatory requirements.

Kieran regularly works with organizations at various stages of development, from newly formed entities seeking incorporation and charitable status to established organizations undertaking governance reviews and organizational restructuring. He enjoys helping clients navigate complex legal issues while remaining focused on their organizational purposes and ministry objectives.

Human Rights and Religious Freedom

Kieran assists churches and faith-based organizations in navigating human rights and religious freedom issues. He understands the unique legal considerations facing religious organizations as they seek to carry out their missions while complying with applicable legal obligations.

He has a particular interest in the intersection of human rights law, religious freedom, and charity law. Kieran works with faith-based organizations to develop governance structures, policies, and practices that support their religious purposes and help them operate confidently within Canada’s evolving legal landscape.

Kieran is actively involved in his local church and has participated in a variety of ministry and community outreach initiatives. His commitment to faith and service informs his work with churches, charities, and nonprofit organizations.
